American Series Telecaster. Bought last year. I never wanted a telecaster. I didn't think much of 'em as each one I've tried in the past was lifeless to me. But Sarah picked this one out. It was the wrong color and wrong fretboard material. I plugged it in and the next day I took it home. This is the guitar for me. It's awesome. I perform 90% of each set with it.
Highway 1 strat. This guitar is Fender's lower level American made guitar. It has a thin very dentable finish. It has a few nicks here and there. I put a humbucker in it and I hate it. I want to put custom shop 54 single coil pickups in it. I use it as a backup as it has a great neck and it's very comfortable. I can't get into her as much as the telecaster. I bought it for $450 at Mars when they were going out of business.
Epiphone Dot. This is a backup sometimes. It's great for recording and for getting that deep, mahagony brown Gibson sound. I really like it. But it's bigger and bulky and sometimes I just can't really work well with humbuckers. I can't hang it as low as the Fenders either. I have to re-eq the amp when I change guitar so lately it's been staying home. But she sounds really good, especially for a Korean guitar. But I think I'm a single coil Fender guy.
Guild and Fender acoustics. I write everything on acoustic. I started on acoustics. The Fender is a Korean made guitar and it's really nice. The Guild is a thin, beat up, used black and burst looking thing. It was made in Rhode Island back when they made guitars there.
Deluxe Reverb Reissue. This is really my only amp. It's only 22 watts and has nine tubes in it. She gets loud (ask Les). It's only clean, no dirty channels.
Boss Overdrive and a Boss Blues Driver. I'll use a different one depending on the song and sometimes I'll use the blues driver as a boost in addition to the overdrive. It really helps guitar solos like in "about a girl". Wasabi overdrive. It's cool and made by Danelectro. It has five flavors so I can go from Fender, Vox, Marshall....but....sometimes it cuts my signal. So I stopped taking her out. I got it for $30 at Guitar Center when they had a sale. Big Muff. You want to sound like Jack White? This is it. It's fun to play with but can get really muddy. It's fuzzy. I can't take it out anymore as the band hates it. Even Sarah. Boss Chorus. Sometimes I forget I still own it. Boss Delay. It's new and was a xmas gift from Sarah. I'm still getting used to it. It's fun in the house and it has me working on some new tones.
Whew, my fingers are tired.

Clay's amp does get loud. It is definetly all you need!

We tried out a guitar player once when we were thinking about becoming a four piece. He didn't add much but noise. Flip said "we don't need him for that....We have Clay for that".
At our last show I found the sweet spot in the amp. I turned off my ODs to play a softer song clean and Chris yelled for us to do something else. So I went into a harder song and forgot to hit the overdrive. Three more songs into the set I realized I didn't need them for much that night. Of course this was at KC's where it's a big room and you can let your amp breathe a bit more than say, at the Bourbon or the Loft.

Yeah, the room has a lot to do with it. I would really just lke to use the amp and screw the effects. Now that I'm no longer and a badn I can just write some music where I can do that. LOL!

Everything I write is simple and clean to start off with. I have no idea what the song will be when it grows up. I can envision how Chris will take it and add to it, or (back in the day) Flip would play to it. For the most part I'd let the guys write their own parts with me only telling them "do something here, but not here...or come in here". So it goes from an acoustic number in my living room to eventually, usually, a hard rocking distorted song.

So you always write on the acoustic? I play the acoustic a lot as well, but it seems that I always play mellow type of stuff. Sometimes I can pick up the electric and come up with something that rocks a little more. But I do know what you mean, in Rockfarm, Paul wrote all on the acoustic, and then greg and I would get a hold of it and turn it into a rocker.

Nah, they can be rockers on the acoustic. Did you know Guns N Roses wrote everything on acoustic? I'll start a song knowing it's going to be a fast, hard rock song. I'm just doing it fast and hard on an acoustic first.

Yeah, I guess it's really what you have in mind when you start playing. I did not know the GNR wrote all their stuff on acoustic though. Never would have guess that.
