So Chris got a bunch of new goodies for the studio and one of the things he got was a Behringer v-amp. It's basically a Line 6 pod but about $400 cheaper. I can't see the Line 6 being worth the extra money as this v-amp kicks ass. There's 32 amp simulations along with about 15 cabinets and a bunch of effects. Chris' idea is to use the v-amp as a direct to the board so I can be in the same room as him and Tom while they lay down their tracks. That way an amp won't bleed onto their mix. I also think the v-amp will be cool for some actual tracks. My idea will be to use my good old fashioned tube amp and then use the v-amp to layer a few tracks on top of it.
From playing the v-amp I think I want a Fender 57 Bassman. I love that setting. The Marshall jtm 45 (I think) is pretty cool too and you can get some nice cleans on that one as well as distortion. I didn't like the AC30 as much as I thought I would. I liked the JCM800 too as you could dial it down also.
The wild ones I liked was the Mesa Boogie Mark II. That was thick and resembled a Mesa. I liked the Soldano a lot. I cranked both volumes and the gain and struck a chord on the Soldano and it rode for about an hour. I could tap the back of my guitar and it was making some freaky space effects.
It's already given me some ideas for the upcoming recording.

They are wicked little machines. I like the way the lights display when you boot it up. We used to use one for the exact same thing when recording. You could lay down a rough track while recording the drums. For some reason Paul never used it for recording. I think it came through great on what I heard, but not having one personally, I have never actually been able to experiment.

I'm hoping to experiment. I know it'll make our live sound completely different as the v-amp isn't leaving the studio. I'll be all tube at the shows.
I have been thinking of getting another amp. Something more for a rock band than my DRRI. Any suggestions? I have a 412 cabinet I was gonna give to Tom but he's getting his own. I could always get a head. The Vox AC30 heads kinda intrigue me. So does the Marshall dsl50. But that one is real expensive.

I totally agree with being all tube. The VOX AC30 intrigues me as well, but only due to articles that I have read. I wish I had a suggestion, but you, just as myself, need to get out and play some amps and see I guess. you mentioned Soldano earlier, but christ, you have to take out a mortgage to buy one of those and I think the marshalls are pricey as well. Another amp that I read people raving about is the peavey classic 30. I have the classic 50, but I have heard some people say the classic 30 is much better.

I don't want a Peavey. I have some standards. The Soldano is out of reach and I've never played one so not a consideration.
I like the Marshall 2000 dsl 50 or whatever. It actually has a nice clean and it's a rocker. It's not over the top distortion, but it could be. The Vox is the new chinese made AC30s. They also have an AC15. Those prices are very doable but I'd still have to save. The AC30 is about 30 watts which is perfect for live gigging. Plus, the Vox is a looker.
I was also checking out a very old Randall RT30. It's an all tube American hand wired amp which is a copy of the AC30.

Aw, I didn't mean to offend you. The classics are Fender/Vox clones which are more affordable. They do a fine job and lots of people gig with them. I just want better and more reliable for down the road. I think if I had a Peavey I would want a better sound and I'd know that I could get that elsewhere. And actually, I tried a Peavey Classic 50 head and thought it was much better than the 30.

You didn't? hmm.. anyway I'm not offended. it's like any and everything else. It's personal preference. Everyone's ears are different. I DO think that Peavey stuff is very reliable though. And the AC30 is chinese? Damn, that sux, they are all going chinese now.

Yeah, Vox is making the new AC30's and now the AC15's in China. They're called Custom Classics and they're extremly cheap compared to British made Vox's. A new AC30CC will cost you $999 and the 15 is $599. They a little different in that there's actually a few more features on the Chinese versions than the British ones. They sound good. They're also making a head version of the AC30 and that's appealing also since I have that huge 412 cabinet. I really like the tone of a Vox.
Peavey has started to make a few amps that are their own sounds like the 5150 (though the new ones have a different name since Van Halen ended his relationship with them). Ronnie has one and he makes it sound bad ass. It totally fits his style. That sucker is heavy though.

I'm still sticking with my GT-3 through a Crate Amp. Gives me all the effects I need. Once we start getting serious and looking to play out, I'll look into a better amp. I used to have the Crate VC-120 head through a Crate cabinet that had 4x12 celestion speakers. That thing could pump out some power. I'm guessing they're antiques now, it's been a while since I've needed/owned a half stack
edit: my bad. Their Celestions, not Celestials

Peavey has always been USA(for the most part as far as amps), but they have that new series that is all chinese. Hey at least we can still make good guitars in America.
